The Accident by Glen Ebisch (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by Glen Ebisch

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Karen Walker is an ex-homicide detective slowly recovering from the trauma of an automobile accident in which she was injured and her husband was killed when a drunk driver struck the car she was operating. After a year of surgeries and attempts to come to terms with her feelings of guilt, she finds herself living the narrow life of a semi-recluse.

Her seclusion comes to an end when an old friend from college, Clarissa Hammett, asks Karen to help in the search for her missing sister, Justine.  Karen agrees, and she goes to live alone in the family’s summer home on the coast of southern Maine, which Justine was occupying at the time of her disappearance.  Karen even goes one step further and takes on Justine’s job as hostess in a local restaurant, hoping to learn more about the missing woman’s life from her co-workers.

Conversations with the sister’s estranged husband, her present boyfriend, and a mentally disturbed young girl on the beach, lead Karen to believe that Justine’s disappearance was not voluntary and that, if still alive, she may desperately need help.

EXCERPT

I heard the intruder walk around the foot of my bed. I lay there breathing deeply but softly. I was reassured when I saw a dark shape go between one window and myself. Having one sense reinforced by another increased my confidence that I wasn’t imagining someone being there. The figure was now in the dark corner between the two windows. I had to convince myself of that. When the time came, my swing couldn’t be tentative or uncertain. It takes a certain leap of faith to swing full force at what could be an empty space, so in my mind, I filled it with a living, breathing person. In one smooth motion I hopped from the bed, took a step forward, and turned on the light.

Frozen in the glow of the light was a man dressed in black wearing in a ski mask holding a knife in his right hand.

The Silver Mosaic by Michael McMenamin & Patrick McMenamin (Spotlight, excerpt, review, and GIVEAWAY) GFT

by Michael McMenamin & Patrick McMenamin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

March, 1933. The weak German economy is in peril. Winston Churchill wants to push it over the cliff with a boycott of German exports and take with it the new Nazi government whose brown-shirt SA thugs are terrorizing German Jews. He enlists Hearst journalist Mattie McGary, but the Nazis are determined to fight back. To oppose the boycott, they find unlikely allies in the Jews of Palestine and FDR.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Though Churchill had been out of government office since 1929 when his last post as Chancellor of the Exchequer ended, he maintained a network of intelligence sources throughout Europe, including Germany, who kept him as well informed on developments there as the British Prime Minister or Foreign Secretary. From them, he knew that in the last two months, Germany literally had become a gangster nation. The police made no effort to interfere with the SA, the ‘Brownshirts’ who served as the Nazi Party’s private army. Scores were settled with impunity. Robberies, rapes, beatings and murders were commonplace. Their victims were Communists, Social Democrats, Jews and anyone else who had ever offended the brown-shirted Storm Troopers of the SA.
The violence against the Jews and Hitler’s failure to rein it in were, in Churchill’s opinion, his first two big mistakes.
Now, Churchill was planning to make Hitler pay. The Jews were key. In the short term, with a little luck, what Churchill knew to be a very weak German economy could collapse and with it the entire odious Nazi regime. If not, then in the long term, Germany’s ability to re-arm and wage war would be dramatically weakened.
Churchill may have been out of power and out of influence, but he was not out of ideas. He had a multi-faceted plan for dealing with Hitler and the threat to the peace of Europe he posed. He hoped that the first, but not the last, step would be taken in a few moments.
My review
4 stars
The Silver Mosaic by Michael McMenamin and Patrick McMenamin is a historical suspense story that is part of the ‘Winston Churchill 1930s Thriller’ series. An unlikely assortment of people work together to thwart German persecution of Jews during the maneuverings that predate World War II. A vicious cat-and-mouse game that transpires across multiple countries and leaves carnage in its wake reflects the machinations and countermeasures taken by groups that have diametrically opposing goals, and leads to alliances that are contradictory but pragmatic.
History has never been my strong point, so I won’t attempt to evaluate the accuracy of many of the events chronicled in this story as it is a piece of fiction. I am sure a few liberties have been taken with certain events (especially since one of the main characters is fictitious, lol), even as the multitudinous footnotes and the authors’ notes at the end of the book refer to extensive research that provides the framework for this imaginative tale.
I admit I was initially reluctant to read this story once I discovered it was fairly long, is told in third person omniscient—thereby causing the action to constantly skip from person to person and country to country—and the focus was a horrific time in history. Amazingly enough, I was drawn into the tale as the authors brought to life multiple historical figures and created a narrative that is filled with anecdotes and interesting asides even as the race to stay alive and combat the underhanded and atrocious torture and murders is vividly depicted. Please be warned that there is considerable graphic violence described (including a propensity for mutilation and torture), as well as sexual harassment and nonconsensual sex. This is an action-packed and intriguing look at the world stage and maneuverings leading to WWII that will likely be enjoyed by those who like suspenseful political stories (and have strong stomachs!).
EXCERPT
He wasn’t as much shocked by his physical reaction as by the fact that it happened at all. For a long time now, he’d managed to keep a clamp on his sex drive and take it out only when required, like taking aspirin for a headache.
“You’re a smart woman,” he congratulated her. “I didn’t know if you’d play along with me.”
She inhaled an unsteady breath and blew it out. “I took a chance. You could have been worse than they were.”
“Still, that shows brains and quick thinking. Good for you.” He studied the interior of her car. “Wow. They did a number with that window. Don’t move. There’s chunks and pebbles everywhere.”
She stared at him, studying his face. “You promise you aren’t the second wave? You know, like good cop, bad cop? The bad guys threaten me and you come along and win my confidence by helping me?”
“Nope. Scout’s honor.”
“I, uh, saw that you have a gun.”
“So did those jackasses. I wanted them to see it.” He smiled at her. “But I only use it as part of my job.”
She caught her lower lip in her teeth. “They just came at me out of nowhere and ran me off the road. Then they boxed me in and smashed the window.”
“Later I’ll want all the details. Right now let’s get you out of here.”
“Do you know who they are? Those men?”
“No.” His voice hardened. “But I know other garbage like them.”
She swallowed. “So who are you, anyway?”
“Oh. Sorry.” He winked at her, and the tension in her body visibly eased. “Logan Malik. Savior of women in danger.”
“Devon Cole.” She dug up a smile. “Woman in danger who needed saving.”
Of The Divine by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes (VBT, guest post, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT
I have the pleasure of sharing a guest post from author Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, who shares how one of her hobbies affects her writing...
AAR: One of my hobbies that twines in an interesting way with my writing is my love of cooking— or just more generally my love of food.
When I was writing Cooper in Token of Darkness, I went on a baking kick. Did I need to experiment with making pastries and apple tarts to write the few scenes Cooper spent working in his uncle’s bakery? Absolutely not, but doing so gave me a yummy insight into my character.
After all, everyone eats, and what we eats tells a lot about us.  Does someone only eat chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, and frozen broccoli? Or is their diet rich with stuffed grape leaves, kebabs and rice pilaf? Do they keep kosher, or do they survive on a steady diet of Mountain Dew and Doritos? Each combination tells us something new about a person (and by extension, a character). I find I often start craving the foods my characters talk about
During my last year’s NaNo novel, I randomly combined ingredients I knew were available in the area (I dedicate a lot of time to determining the agriculture and thus local foods available in areas) to create a made-up dish popular on one of their holidays. It ended up being a pink spread including soybeans and red beets, served either sweet (with honey) or savory (with garlic and onion).
Then, being me, I experimented with making it. Thankfully, I have a fabulous partner who tolerates my experiments, which is good because this is far from being the weirdest food experiment I’ve ever attempted. In the case, she not only ate with me but made suggestions on how to improve the fictional dish next time.
There are other, non-food experiments and adventures I’ve done as part of my writing. When writing Midnight Predator, I learned to pick locks and braid and use a bullwhip. My 2013 NaNo involved a mostly-subterranean complex built in a series of caves, and I ended up exploring Howe Caverns in New York. For the Mancer trilogy, I’ve spent time in Salem, whose maritime history is part of the inspiration for the capital city. In short, if there is a way I can experience something my characters do, I’ll go for it… but that isn’t always feasible or advisable, especially given some of the horrific things I put my characters through.
Generally speaking, food is safer. And (usually) tastier.
BLURB:
Henna is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the Order of Napthol, and her runes ’s runes tell her that the future of Kavet is balanced on the edge of the knife. The treaties between Kavet and the dragon-like race known as the Osei have become intolerable. The time has come for the royal house to magically challenge Osei dominion. Prince Verte, Henna' lover, is to serve as the nexus for the powerful but dangerous spell, with Naples--an untested young sorcerer from the Order of Napthol--a volatile but critical support to its creation.
Amid these plans, Dahlia Indathrone’s arrival in the city shouldn’t matter. She has no magic and no royal lineage, and yet, Henna immediately knows Dahlia is important. She just can’t see why.
As their lives intertwine, the four will learn that they are pawns in a larger game, one played by the forces of the Abyss and of the Numen—the infernal and the divine.
A game no mortal can ever hope to win.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

The pride of Osei abruptly turned and dove. Serpentine bodies large enough to lift ships from the sea plummeted. They changed shape so close to the ground that the wind from their wings smacked the plaza like a hand, rattling or knocking over the light carts and tables the early morning merchants set up to display their wares. Henna squinted her eyes against the grit that smacked her face as the Osei landed with enough force to shatter their bodies had they been human.

People in the plaza scattered, scrambling away to hide in the shelter of surrounding buildings, but Henna couldn’t make her muscles move as the Osei queen looked around speculatively.

The creature had skin like liquid silver and eyes like barbed steel. As she crossed the plaza directly toward Henna’s frozen form, Henna recognized her. She was the only Osei queen who ever left her own territory to visit another Osei House.

The Queen of the First House, the Royal House of the Osei, was standing in the Kavet marketplace.

Henna felt all the blood drain from her face. Maybe farther. Was she bleeding onto the cobbles? Into the core of the earth?

“You know us,” the queen said. “That is convenient. You will inform the rulers of this land that we require their immediate presence.”

Zoe's Mates by Izzy Szyn (Spotlight, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) RBC

Zoe's Mates
by Izzy Szyn

Blurb:
Previously released under the title Sexual Healing in the Coming In Hot Boxed Set.
Zoe's Mates has been edited with some new material.
Paramedic Zoe Whitaker is set to become engaged to Saratoga Falls Hospital's Chief of Staff Derek Barnes. But when his twin brother Liam returns with his lover Brent Taylor, Zoe begins to think she's with the wrong twin.
Liam and Brent came back from Ravana for one reason only, to claim Zoe Whitaker.

Excerpt:
The minute they walked in the bakery, Zoe knew what was missing in her life. Them. It took a second for Zoe to realize that Liam was with Brent. Inside she was jumping up and down, her head reminded her that they left without even saying goodbye. “Liam?” It wasn’t fair, thought Zoe, that he looked even better than he did before. “What are you doing here?” A sexual hunger started to awaken inside her. Her pulse started to race, which was stupid. They probably just wanted to catch up. “As soon as you left the hospital, I called him,” Brent admitted. “I couldn’t stay away,” Liam admitted. Opening his arms, “Come here.” Zoe could hear people talking around her. She didn’t care, she was home, in Liam’s arms. The only thing missing was Brent’s arms. “Quit hogging her,” protested Brent.

Lust, Lace & Lingerie by Brandi Evans (VBB, excerpt, and GIVEAWAY) GFT ADULT title

by Brandi Evans
ADULT title

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   contemporary BDSM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

I love managing Red Light Lingerie, a sexy boutique in Dallas. I get to spend my days talking to people about bedroom wear, sex toys, and enhancement lotions for all occasions. But by far, my favorite erotic job perk is my sexy British boss, Maxwell Penn.

Max is a Matthew McConaughey look-alike who’s equal parts dreamboat and domineering pain in the neck, and I regularly fluctuate between “I want to bed him” and “I want to strangle him.” But still, yum.

The paradigm of our relationship, however, changes irrevocably when a lingerie designer, a friend of Max’s from Britain, comes to town, and I have to stand in for a no-show lingerie model. Before I can say G-string, I find myself sandwiched between Max and his dark-n-sexy friend.

I’d be in total heaven if it weren’t for the guilt swirling in Max’s blue eyes. I have no idea why it’s there, but I’m bound and determined to find out.

Publisher’s Note: This book contains descriptions of consensual activities, including eroticism and discipline. If you object to these elements, please do not read this book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
(R+)
I yanked against my restraints. The material stretched with my movements, but my hands stayed firmly bound at the small of my back.
“See, Max? This is one sturdy piece of lingerie.”
My mind exploded with images of what they could do to me, completely helpless and practically naked. Should I worry? A smart woman probably would—but the look in Max’s eyes—
I’d never wanted him more than I did at that moment.
Garrett’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “Also, I designed the top so the two front halves can be pushed together to allow quick and easy access to the tits without having to untie any restraints already put in place. Would you like a demonstration of that, too?”
Max’s gaze stayed locked with mine, never veering, never faltering. “I’m thinking.”
I bit my bottom lip and shook my head. But who was I fooling? I’d wanted Max to touch me for a long time. I’d dreamed about it and gotten off while imagining him fucking me. But what about Garrett? I’d fantasized about being with multiple men, too, so I’d consider his presence icing on the beefcake.
Part of me wished Max and I were alone, but it was probably better we weren’t. Less intimate, which I needed. As it was, the intensity of his stare threatened to melt me into a puddle.
“Please touch me, Max,” I whispered, unable to stop myself. At least, I think I verbalized the words, but I may have simply mouthed them. “Please.”
Max’s eyes widened. His nostrils flared. And he hesitated a long, tortuous moment before stepping into me and yanking the garment’s outer edges into the valley between my breasts, completely exposing me—and then cupping the undersides of my breasts.
